A Life of Innovation and Determination
Bill Maclachlan is known for his larger-than-life personality, captivating stories, and unwavering work ethic. His journey began on his family’s farm in Wisconsin, where he learned the value of hard work and the importance of family—values that have driven him throughout his career.
Bill’s initial foray into sales included various roles, but his position at a mobility company in 1990 ignited his passion for inclined elevators. Leading the Cliff Climber division, Bill saw immense innovation potential. However, resistance to his ideas led him to leave the company and pursue his vision independently.
The Birth of Hill Hiker, Inc.
On Valentine’s Day in 1997, with a $5,000 investment from his father, Jim MacLachlan, and the support of his family, Bill and his wife Laurel founded Hill Hiker, Inc. Drawing on his industry knowledge and the engineering expertise of his father-in-law, Noel Davis, Bill developed the first generation of the Hill Hiker® Inclined Elevator system. Their first elevator installation on the shores of Lake Minnetonka marked the beginning of a journey characterized by relentless innovation and a commitment to quality.
Innovating for Safety and Reliability
From the outset, Bill’s philosophy was to “do it right and keep it simple,” focusing on safety and reliability. Hill Hiker’s® design features, such as the captured guide rail design with a “C” shape profile, set it apart from competitors. Over the years, the Hill Hiker® system has evolved, but its core principles remain unchanged. Components like steel construction, oversized hoist ropes, and American-made gearboxes ensure that every Hill Hiker® system stands the test of time.
Pioneering Wireless Technology and Custom Designs
Bill’s pioneering spirit led to the integration of wireless technology in Hill Hiker® systems, enhancing safety and reliability, especially in harsh outdoor environments. This innovation was a game-changer, setting new industry standards and gaining acceptance from regulatory authorities.

Whether designing cars to match a home’s aesthetic or creating miniature versions of iconic cable cars, Bill and his team embrace a “whatever you dream of, we can build” mentality. Bill has built a successful company throughout his career and left a lasting impact on the inclined elevator industry. Hill Hiker, Inc. has installed nearly 600 systems worldwide, winning numerous awards and earning the trust of high-profile clients. Bill’s contributions extend beyond his company; he actively participates in the ASME A17.1 Inclined Elevator code committee, working alongside his wife Laurel to improve industry standards and integrate new technologies.
