The world’s a big place. From the equator, a trip around the globe would take over forty hours by plane to travel a distance of 24,859.82 miles. Although Hill Hiker® can’t get you all the way around the world, we’re exceptional at getting you across its treacherous inclined terrain with our Hill Hiker® Hillside Lift Systems.
Traversing difficult terrain is our business and people from all around the world have been coming to us for help for help since 1997. Here’s a quick look at a few stops on our journey around the world, a journey that took our brand from the hilly shores of Lake Minnetonka, Minnesota to three continents, nine countries and 32 US states and territories so far!
In 1997 our Founder, Bill, created the funicular manufacturer company using his knowledge of the elevator and construction industries, along with some help from his family and a bit of ingenuity. It didn’t take this new inclined elevator manufacturer long to spread its wings to far off places. A year later, we took one of our funiculars to an Eco Tourism resort in Belize. After four years, we went back to Belize to install our longest Hill Hiker® Hillside Lift System to date (505 feet).
Making a 505 foot funicular in the jungle was no easy task, but we thrive under pressure. This is evident when you check out one of our most difficult projects, located on the eastern shores of Lake Erie in New York State. There, an eroding cliff loomed over a picturesque shoreline. Residents of a Lakeview New York home wanted to get to the bottom of the cliff safely and enjoy their beach that had been so close, yet nearly inaccessible. For our system to work, it had to be built tough and smart. It took a lot of ingenuity to make a lift that would survive the hostile terrain.
The crumbling cliffs of Lake Erie’s shoreline provided a number of challenges, but the high tides of the Bay of Fundy in Canada created a unique set of problems for one island community in the Five Islands area, where visitors must be taxied in by boat. With the world’s highest tides, ranging from 40 to 60 feet every day, our Hill Hiker® Hillside Lift System had to be made to withstand the extreme circumstances of the area. It had to withstand regular periods of being submerged in corrosive salt water, which is why we made it out of high grade stainless steel.
Because the island has few conventional power sources, the system is powered by solar energy. Last of all, we provided the boats with a remote control that communicates with the Hill Hiker® Hillside Lift System wirelessly. This allows a safer and more efficient passage for the travelers.
Over the past 18 years, Hill Hiker® has seen the world as our funiculars provided the answer to many of our client’s access problems. You can see pictures and learn more details of our journey by visiting our portfolio.
